Jody Baker

The Rev. Will Roger Malave of Torrington asked the hundreds of people who gathered at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church Monday morning to reveal who Jody Baker truly was.

“Don’t be shy,” was Malave’s plea during the Mass for Baker, a longtime Waterbury educator and special education teacher who died of a heart attack at the age of 59 last Wednesday.

He was described as a mentor, a good friend and colleague, a humble and good man.

“Jody made your day with his smile,” said Sacred Heart High School guidance counselor Mark Saukas, the school’s former longtime baseball coach.

More telling was the eulogy delivered by Baker’s colleague, Debora Taylor, the director of guidance at Sacred Heart.

“It takes respect, compassion, patience and, of course, a sense of humor to be a teacher of his caliber,” said Taylor. “Jody had it all … I can’t think of starting school in the fall without Jody.”

Employed by the City of Waterbury to serve the city’s parochial schools, Baker split his days alternating between Mount Carmel and Blessed Sacrament and Sacred Heart High as a special education teacher.

Taylor noted that Baker’s finest attribute was his unique relationship with students.

Just ask Waterbury native Anthony Spinelli, now 26, who was taught by Baker at Mount Carmel from second to eighth grade. Spinelli is now in his third year as a special education teacher in Ridgebury Elementary School in Ridgefield.

“For me, Mr. Baker taught me to realize my own potential and be an advocate for myself,” said Spinelli at a reception at La Bella Vista. “He had the perfect balance as a teacher, mentor and friend.”

And as a father figure to so many, said Waterbury’s Ron Putetti, 27, who is a close friend of Baker’s son, Adam. Putetti and Adam were classmates at Mount Carmel and later at Holy Cross High.

“From the time I was in kindergarten, Mr. Baker treated me like one of the members of his family,” said Putetti. “He was always there to give me advice and told me to go for what I wanted and not to listen to the naysayers.”

Putetti is furthering his education in counseling, as is Adam Baker, a member of the Republican-American sports department.

Jody Baker graduated from Holy Cross High in 1974. He met Marilyn, his wife of 28 years, when they both were teachers at St. Margaret’s School in 1982.

“We would talk in the lunchroom and I would see how he would connect with the students in class,” said Marilyn. “I saw how wonderful of a man he was. He was such a genuine person.”

They began dating in 1985 and were married in 1987. Hours before he was stricken at his home last week, Jody and Marilyn talked of his impending retirement.

“Jody loved to cook and always would invent new recipes,” said Marilyn. “He said that he would write a cook book in his retirement. I preferred he cook, bigtime. I would always say for him to put some taste into the dishes with sauces and spices because sometimes my cooking came out blah.”

An avid Bruce Springsteen fan, Adam and his dad would attend concerts together.

His colleagues at Sacred Heart spoke of Jody Baker’s attire on casual Fridays featuring a sweatshirt, jeans and Converse sneakers. He rarely liked wearing formal attire, although his niece, Nicole DiCocco, 35, recalled being pleasantly surprised to see her uncle in a tuxedo at her debutante ball at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City as an 18-year-old. “Jody always thought of someone else,” said Sacred Heart teacher and golf coach Michael Madden.

Taylor noted that in the past, she always looked to Baker for guidance in giving speeches because “he always knew exactly what I wanted to say. Jody was always my go-to guy. I struggled with this eulogy. There are no words to accurately express the essence of my friend.”

Andrea Craig - Locks Of Love

Sacred Heart senior Andrea Craig decided to take her required community service hours a step further. Andrea donated 13” of her beautiful hair to a program named Locks of Love.

Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. They meet a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics. Most of the children helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. The prostheses they provide help to restore the children’s self-esteem and the children’s confidence, enabling them to face the world and their peers.

Andrea has had numerous friends and family members affected by the horrible disease of cancer and wanted to be able to make a difference in a child’s life. Great job Andrea!

2015 SH Award Winners 1

2015 SH Award Winners 2

Sacred Heart High School will honor 10 school supporters and community advocates at its 21st annual Awards Dinner on Nov. 2 at the Aqua Turf in Southington.

This year’s dinner is underwritten in part by “gold sponsor” Moore, O’Brien, & Foti, along with “maroon” and “gold” sponsors, Winzz Gas n’ Go; Ultimate Services; Carmody, Torrance, Sandak & Hennessey; Dennis Uniform; Loehmann Blasius Chevrolet Cadillac; Apex International Education Partners; and M.J. Fahy & Sons. Proceeds support student programming and the scholarship assistance program which annually awards more than $680,000.

The Hartford Archdiocese’s oldest Catholic high school, Sacred Heart has graduated more than 12,000 in nine decades.

The hallmark of Sacred Heart has always been and continues to be, the spirited selflessness of its families and volunteers, according to a press release issued by Sacred Heart. It is in this spirit of generosity that Sacred Heart celebrates this year’s honorees, reads a portion.

The Rev. Jeffrey V. Romans, Pastor of St. Bridget’s Church, will be presented with the Rev. John J. Fitzgerald Lifetime Achievement Award. Father Romans is being honored for “his passionate commitment to the value of Catholic education and as someone who has given selflessly of himself for the benefit of others,” reads the release.

Attorney Stephanie Cummings, a 2005 graduate and Waterbury alderman, will receive the Marcia Galvin Brayton Alumni Award. This award is presented to Stephanie for “her continuing support and commitment to helping to further the mission of Sacred Heart High School and for her dedication and commitment to the City of Waterbury.”

Attorney James and Deborah Dowling Mulhall, class of 1976 and Watertown residents, will receive the Rev. John Blanchfield Family Spirit Award. “Because of the school’s belief in the importance of family life, this award is presented to Jim and Debbie for their dedicated efforts in enhancing the spirit and mission of Sacred Heart.”

Attorney Adrienne Dean Parkmond, a graduate of Sacred Heart’s class of 1986 and a Waterbury resident, will be presented with the Rev. Cornelius Teulings Community Service Award for “her dedication and commitment to public service, as well as for her personal and professional qualities which serve as fine examples for the students of Sacred Heart.”

Penny A. Leisring, a graduate of Sacred Heart’s class of 1989 and a resident of Waterbury, will receive the Monsignor James G. Coleman Award. “Dr. Leisring is being recognized for the success she has attained in her professional career which serves as a reflection on the preparation she received while a student at the Heart.”

Raymond Coughlin, a graduate of the class of 1963 and a Waterbury resident, will be presented with the Rev. John Dial Leadership Award for “his commitment and leadership support in helping to further the mission of Sacred Heart High School.”

Todd Nugai, of Watertown, a 1991 graduate, will receive the Sisters of Mercy Public Service Award “for his dedication in serving his community as a member of the Waterbury Fire Department and for his commitment in helping to protect the citizens of the City of Waterbury.”

Nazih Noujaim, a Prospect resident and 1982 graduate, will receive the Rev. John Meaney Community Impact Award “to recognize the impact that our legacy families have on their communities, their families, as well as the Greater Waterbury community.”

Jody Baker, a special education teacher for city parochial schools who died in July at age 59, will receive the Dom Giallello Award “for the impact he had on the students of Sacred Heart and its school community as our special education teacher, and for his immeasurable commitment and dedication he had for our students.”
